Sunny Rhyl Allotment - 2008 |
||
|
13/05/2008 It's year 2 of The Sunny Rhyl Allotment! Last year was a learning curve. Some modest successes and some dismal failures. The highlight was the Leeks that cropped from October to January. They figured large in our recipe's and tasted fantastic to boot! The Onion sets all went well and were stored and used when needed. They worked a treat. The Potatoes were great and what Carrots we grew all matured and were to die for. The Tomatoes were disappointing, with most plants lost to a sort of Blight. The Celery was tough and very stringy, so uch so that it wasn't eaten. The Broccoli all bolted and we didn't have a single Squash from the 4 plants. 8 Strawberries from the 6 alpine plants was not a roaring success, neither was 1 Bell Pepper from 8 plants. Clearly I have a long was to go :) 2008 and optimism is high! The plot has been extended, with some more of the border cleared and utilised. The anti-Chicken defenses are back up and the rotted manure has been well dug in.
All grown from seed, Cabbage, Sprouts, French Beans, Squash and Cucumber all take a place.
Onion Sets were the first in and are growing well.
Also grown from seed, against the advice of the packet, I grew the Beetroot indoors and planted out the tiny plants.
Some Lettuce are taking residence in the newly reclaimed border.
2008 sees the return of the Runner Bean Wigwam.
After a winter sabatical ferrying broken tiles from the renovated bathroom to the tip, the drilled buckets are back in their primary role as the home for the Potatoes.
Over in the lower field, the Tomatoes are in Grow Bags and pots and a couple of Strawberry plants are potted up.
It'll be interesting to see how it all develops...... Happy Days!!
