21/06/2008 I've been battling the weeds this weekend! It's amazing how fast they can take over your plot if not kept in check. A few good hours were spent clearing the unwanted growth. I had written off the French Bean and Corgette plants. They struggled from the the off and have recently been engulfed with the weeds. It was a pleasant surprise to discover after clearing the patch, I have some surviving plants.
The bed of Lettuce has gone from strength to strength. We have already harvested a couple. With all plants being coming to maturity at the same time, we are going to have to eat like rabbits for the next week or so.
The Beetroot that survived the Chicken attack are growing well but it is noticeable that the edible roots are above ground. I'm suspect this is not as it should be!
Consistantly, the Onions are stil progressing well.
The Cabbage and Sprouts are getting really big. Too big infact! I think I underestimated the spacing on these little babies! Time will tell.
The 4 Cucumber plants are now 3. All look in a pitiful state. None are over a foot tall. On closer inspection though, I actually have 2 fruits. It may turn out to be all that I get though.
Elsewhere, the Runer Bean wigwam has made slow progress. It's still looking healthy though.
The Potatoes in buckets had not been fenced off from the Chickens. Until now!!!! They discovered the delights of Potato leaves and set about munching their way through severel plants.
I have relocated the buckets to a Chook-free environment and their recovery has been rapid.
The Tomatoes are starting to show now. Lots of fruits give me high hopes for this years salads!
Happy Days!!
