Sunny Rhyl Allotment - 2007

23/07/2007

With the weather being as it has, I have not been able to appreciate the garden as much as I would have liked this summer.

The allotment has not been forgotten though.

With little need to water, it has been left to it's own devices with the occasional watchful eye placed on it.

It has been a bit of a mixed set of results so far.

The Sweetcorn have a few healthy cobs showing.

The Onions are all looking healthy. The stems have all been blown over but the bulbs are all growing bigger by the day.

The Brocolli plants seem to have bolted. The small florets all seem to develop into flowers. Maybe I should be harvesting the small florets before this happens?

The French Beans have been productive. We have been eating some of these.

The Leeks are in good shape and healthy. Hopefully their progress will continue.

The Celery are turning into recognisable plants.

The Carrots look like they should.

The success story again this year are the Potatoes grown in buckets. We have been harvesting for weeks now. Each bucket is providing at least 1 meal for the family. Tasty they are too.

I believe the F1 Tumbler Tomatoes are suffering from 'Blight'. A fungal infection apparantly.

The yellowing leaves and general unhealthy look is symptomatic of the condition.

I have been advised to cut back the affected leaves and branches and hope for the best.

It's probably too late for them, but I will give it a try.

My 3 Corgette plants are slowly increasing in size. I have had 2 Corgettes on one plant, but since the photo was taken, they have both died/rotted/been eaten.

My Runner Bean wig-wam is looking fantastic. We have begun to harvest the larger pods.

The Moneymaker Tomatoes are also looking OK. Although the Blight may well be affecting their lower reaches. I will be trimming their lower branches this weekend.

Despite the poor weather and the problems affecting my crops, it was a deeply satisfying tea time last night when we were able to eat freshly caught Mackerel along with some early summer vegtables.

At last, a self sufficient(ish) meal :)

 Happy Days!!
