Page Kayak Spotted In Rhyl Harbour Home |
Sinbad has spent most of life on or around the sea. On a recent wander around Rhyl Harbour, his eyes nearly popped out of his sea-faring head.......................
As he puts it................. " Staying at my Caravan every weekend during the summer is something I look forward to every day at work. The fishing is great, listening to the charter boats on my marine band receiver is fun, staring out to sea with my 20x80 binoculars is interesting, and my AIS Decoder connected to my laptop gives me all the information from the ships heading in and out of Liverpool. But with all this going on I still envy not being out on there doing my own thing on the water. Apart from our charter trips I don’t have the means to venture out to sea.
That was until I met Jason in the Harbour on his Kayak.
I listened eagerly to his talk of catching mackerel and the ease of kayak fishing on a Calm sea. Having done some canoeing years ago this was definitely a thing I am interested in.
The kayaks are just short of £500, even with the extra kit needed life jackets etc its still a cheep
way of getting out and about beyond the beachcasting limits.
"
As Sinbad is the gadget king, I am betting that he will be afloat again before very long. I will update accordingly......... Update 01/10/2006 As predicted, Sinbad was so impressed that he has just ordered himself a 'Frenzy' Ocean Kayak from eBay. At 2.7m in length, the beauty of the 'Frenzy' is that it will fit inside his Mitsibushi Space Wagon. Good thinking!!!!!!!
I will post the pics and reports when he has received it........... Update 05/10/2006 4 days later and Sinbad's neighbours will definately be talking. A large kayak shaped package was delivered . The 'Frenzy' had arrived!!!!!!!! He took delivery of his wet suit, life jacket and boots yesterday. Hopefully, if his oar and seat arrive as planned tomorrow morning, the maiden voyage will take place tomorrow afternoon. Update 06/10/2006 Good news!!!!!! Sinbad's oar and seat arrived as promised.
Christmas has arrived about 4 times for Sinbad this week. Despite the excitement of receiving the actual kayak, his maiden voyage would be scuppered if the oars and seat hadn't arrived.
I have no doubt that Sinbad would have had a practice in the kayak in his back garden. No doubt to the great amusement of his wife.
Dress rehersal over, now it was time to see if the Frenzy would fit into the Sinbad-mobile as planned. After a nervous few minutes and after folding down various seats, the kayak was loaded and ready for the journey.
Just time for a quick cuppa before hitting the road on route to Sunny Rhyl for the maiden voyage.
The story continues.................. Update 16/10/2006 Having bought a set of wheels from Harbour View Tackle in Rhyl, Sinbads kayak is parked by his holiday villa ready to go.
Those wheels were invaluable in transporting his 'Frenzy' down to the low water mark. They can be fitted or removed in a minute.
That's it, the 'Frenzy' is officially afloat!!!!!!!
Like a duck to water, Sinbad stretches his sea legs and savours the moment.
The gentle surf is not a problem to this vessel.
Having had experience in canoes, Sinbad was straight into his stride.
Maiden voyage over, this was a resounding success!!!
Next time the fishing gear will be out! Update 06/11/2006 Sinbad has been busy this weekend. Following in the tradition of a many a great British inventor, he has been designing and building a prototype 'Fishermate' in his well equipped tool shed.
With mountings for 2 rods and space for his comms equipment, Sinbad plans to have the best equipped Kayak this side of Rhos-On-Sea!
Stay tuned..................... Update 11/11/2006 Another productive weekend for Sinbad. His only vice currently is bench mounted and with rubber jaws! The Fishermate MKII is nearly finished. It just needs a lick of varnish and then it will be ready for installation in the Frenzy.
Further updates to come........... Update 18/11/2006 The 'Fishermate' is complete!!!!!!!! After many layers of varnish, the fishing aid has been sanded down to give a high quality finish. The anchor rope is safely stowed around the 2 protruding lugs.
Some insulating foam has been fitted to prevent the 'Fishermate' marking the body of the kayak. The 'Fishermate' is secured in place using 2 bungee cords.
The 2 rod holders are place either side of the 2 way handheld marine radio and the fish finder.
This has been a professional project from start to finish. The quality of the finished product is a testament to Sinbads skill and ingenuity. I am well impressed!!!!!!! Update 21/11/2006 I thought Project Frenzy' was complete. How wrong was I!!!!!! Just when you thought you could not get anything else strapped to this Kayak, Sinbad surpasses himself! Obviously, the fish finder needs a transducer mounted underwater for correct operation. The solution was to fit an extendable arm to the 'Fishermate'.
With the arm extended and underslung, the transducer is suspended beneath the kayak.
The transducer and arm in stowage position.
Surely with all these additions, there is no more you could, or indeed would need to fit to the Frenzy? Al thinks that Sinbad should fit a webcam next. He reckons it would be like a scene from 'Rod Hull and Emu' if Sinbad hooks into a Tope :) Update 22/12/2006 Sinbad has officially named his ship 'Happy Days'. How apt that is!!!!!!!!
