Sunny Rhyl Sea Fishing Diary

Kinmel Bay - 30/10/2006

Venue - Kinmel Bay
Tide - High
Time - Day/Evening
Bait: Fresh Lug, Frozen Sandeel

If you want fish for tea, go to ASDA! That's if you want to eat some pasty coloured 10 day old excuse for a fish. If you want fresh fish for tea, simply drive the extra 50 yds to the beach front carpark and get your rods out!!! At least that was the plan :)

Kimnel Bay is my preferred high water venue at the moment. Parking is free and literally on the beach front, on a good tide, the inner gully is 10ft deep and in recent times, I have not blanked here.

I had the 2 rods out again tonight. The beachcaster along with the Berkley spinning rod. Still to break it's duck, It was close in light ledgering for the Cherrywood tonight. Using a flattie rig and baited with frozen sandeel, this was cast into the wind and reached the first gully. The 2nd rod was baited with fresh lug and was cast beyond the first gully and into the breaking surf of the sandbank beyond.

It was a strong NW wind tonight, so whilst conditions looked hopeful, my casts were falling short of my usual distance. The tide was tiny and the gully never got into any depth of water. About 2 foot deep at the hight of the tide.

It mattered not though! Within seconds of the first cast, the Berkley was about to be christened! With only a 2oz rolling bomb attatched, the trace had disappeared sideways along the gully. A few vague twitches, hard to spot due to the wind, I took hold of the rod and started reeling in. Definately something on. But what? As it got closer, a flattie broke the surface. eventually it was landed and it looked like this.......

Not entirely sure what it is. I am guessing it is a Brill, but could it be a Turbot?? It had some spiney things all over it's back, not sharp, more bumpy than spiney. After a couple of photo's for proof, it was returned into the surf. Sinbad will be crying when I update the species chart!!!!!.

Darkness was approaching, I'd had no luck at range. I had tried both the lug and the sandeel to no avail.

With darkness upon me and only 1 tip light, it was down to the trusty Fladen to deliver the goods now. Again, cast into the surf beyond the gully, the 2 hook clip down was baited with lug on 1 and sandeel on the other hook.

The flourescent tip starting twitching like a good un! Doggie on 1???

Not tonight Josephene!!!!!!!!!

With the clutch set lightly on the Shakespeare reel, this fish was giving and great account of itself. He was nearly in and took off again as he caught sight of dry land. Finally, he was landed and turned out to be a perfectly formed Bass of about 4lb's. Caught on the fresh lug.

I had one last cast with the final 2 worms but the tide had gone out too far by now. Nothing else to report!

Next time I see Simon, I am going to tell him to save his petrol and forget Splash Point. The fishing outside his house is just fine :)

Happy Days!!

Update - 31/10/2006

Apparantly, the flattie was indeed a Turbot and not a Brill. Who would have thought it :)
