Sunny Rhyl Sea Fishing Diary

Kinmel Bay - 03/01/2007

Venue - Kinmel Bay
Tide - High
Time - Day
Bait: Frozen Lug, Frozen Sandeel

After showing those North East Boys that there are still some fish left in the North Sea, well at least 1 flounder, it was back home to fish what is my current favourite high tide venue, Kinmel Bay.

I set my alarm for a 7am wake up with a view to fishing 2hrs either side of high water. I didn't need the alarm clock as it turned out. The sound of the SW wind battering the bedroom windows was more than enough to get me up. I peered out of the window and decided that my bed looked more appealing than the sideways rain outside.

My conscience eventually got the better of me, so I reluctantly cut my lie in short and made my way to Kinmel Bay. I arrived 1 hr before high tide.

I had no fresh bait today. I did manage some refrozen Whitby lug, a pack of frozen worms from Geoffs in Rhyl and some good old frozen sandeel.

The wind was strong, but it was warm and coming from behind me so it wasn't as unpleasant as I had imagined.

I baited my 3 hook flapper with some frozen lug and launched it. I knew I should have stayed in bed when my rig and leader cracked off!!!!!!!

Still swearing, I tackled up again and this time managed to put my trace where I intended it.

The rod tip was dancing around like a 'fox on speed', so I wasn't hopeful of detecting any bites today. On a more positive note, my 4oz gripper was holding, so with a minute to catch my breath, I had a nice cuppa and a bit of a ponder.

Cuppa finished and time to reel in. On the bottom hook of the flapper was a Flounder :)

It all went quiet until an hour after high. Definately something on this time. I reeled in and my trace broke the surface of the water, I could see all 3 hooks still baited up with no fish in sight. I reeled in some more and saw a bright orange shockleader hanging from my gripper lead. It was the trace that cracked off on my first cast. On the bottom of that trace was another Flounder :)

I did persevere for another hour, but there was nothing else doing.

I eventually left happy having made my first entry in the 2007 Species Tally and having lost no gear!!!!!

Happy Days!!
