Kinmel Bay - 04/05/2008 |

Venue - Kinmel Bay I arrived at Sinbad HQ 2 hours before low water. Fishing beyond the perch is not for the fainthearted. The tide goes so far out and races in so quickly that extreme care needs to be taken to ensure that a pleasant days fishing remains just that. The key is travelling light. Even then, the distance to be covered calls for a certain amount of fitness and should not be underestimated. I came armed with my telescopic Warbird, rod spike 2 traces, bait and bucket. Sinbad was equally prepared. Just one rod, tripod and bait bucket. Despite the sunny conditions, I decided that my heavy chest waders would be of benefit today. Sinbad plumped for a pair of wellies. This decision was to be significant! We set off for the long walk past the Perch and beyond.
We crossed severel gulleys with little problem, but to reach the furthest sandbank required us to cross the river. As it flows down to the low tide mark it splits into a series of meandering streams. In my chesties, it was crossable, with extreme care. In Sinbads wellies, it was going to be a wet one! We finally arrived at the mark. Simon was out on Suveran II. A tournament caster would have been in range of his boat. Sadly, I am no tournament caster!!!!!!!
The weather was changeable. Warm and mild, with a moderate SW breeze.
Low tide came and went. The weed was a big problem. Cast after cast I was reeling in a huge clump on my leader knot, another large ball on my rig and the occasional plastic bag on my gripper.
300 yards away, Suveran II was into Dabs,Whiting, Doggies, Thornies and Smoothound. On the shore, with some quality bait, Sinbad managed a Rockling!!!!!!!!!! So close and yet so far :)
The tide was now pushing us back at an alarming rate of knots. Time to cross the 4 final tributaries of the River Clwyd to get back to a safer position. The sound of Sinbads squelching wellies was in evidence agsin :)
We fished the tide back in for a few more hours. It was hard work. I did manage to match Sinbads Rockling, although it nearly went unnoticed in the obligatory ball of weed. With the thought of a cuppa back at Sinbad HQ and our energy levels dropping fast, it was time to call it a day. Happy Days!! |
