Sunny Rhyl Sea Fishing Diary

Bait: Fresh Lug, Manky Lug, Frozen Mackerel

Following a conversation with Geoff of Geoff's Tackle Shop, I was keen to give manky Lug a try.

He explained to me the benefits of using week old worms. A killer bait for Dabs apparantly!

So having left 10 worms to get all sticky and smelly over the last week, the missus was delighted to hear that I was going fishing and that 'the smell' was to be removed from the fridge.

At Kinmel Bay, the strong SW wind had coloured the water and produced a good surf.

My plans to fish the inner gully over high were somewhat scuppered when I arrived to discover the inner gully was no longer there :) The shifting sands had meant the nearest gulley was now 60yds out at high tide. No worries, I just hope the fish were aware of the situation.

Small sections of the manky Lug were used on a 1 up, 1 down size 2 flapper rig. This was fished close in. Fresh Lug and Mackerel coctails were fished at range on a 1/0 pennel rig.

With no activity for the first 3 hours, I decided to try the Mackerel close in as well. Shortly after, I had the first and only bite of the day.

The result was my first Plaice of the year. Taken on the frozen Mackerel. Only small but good enough to take my shore caught species tally for the year to 6.

So the manky Lug didn't work today, but Geoff's information has been logged and I will be giving it another go soon.

Dabs beware :)

Happy Days!!
