Bait: Fresh Lug, Frozen Lug, Frozen Sandeel

I was going to fish my 2 beachcasters today. Unfortunately, whilst tackling up I noticed the end eye of my faithful 12ft Fladen had broken off.

That rod was the first rod I bought last year when I decided to get back into fishing. It had served me well. Very well actually.

In her short life, she had landed numerous flaties, codling, eels, whiting, loads of crabs, several rockling, a couple of weavers and over 10 bass.

It was a poinient moment discovering her demise. I have lots to thank her for.

I would recommend to anyone that feels the urge to get out of the house for some fresh air, to get down to your local Cash Converters and pick yourself up a low cost Fladen rod + reel setup. £30 will get you out there.

Having wiped my tears away, I nipped back to the car and retrieved my 10ft spinning rod.

I had bought my fresh bait from Geoffs Tackle Shop. Nice it was too.

I used my 14ft beachcaster to get a 2 hook clip down rig baited with fresh lug out a fair distance. I had a flattie trace on my spinning rod baited with sandeel and some frozen lug. This was plopped into the inner gully.

Within seconds of casting out, my Fladen was twitching. I reeled in to find a fair sized dab had taken a liking to the fresh lug.

Second cast and the rod was knocking again. This time I missed the bite.

That was to be the story of the day. Loads of nibbles but not many fish landed.

I decided to switch to smaller hooks on the distance rig. This immediately brought results. A pin whiting finally managing to get his mouth around a smaller hook.

The flattie rig had been quiet all day until just passed high tide when this too started to take some knocks. My bait was getting nibbled but nothing was landed on this rig.

About 1hr after high, I had a small rod bender on the Fladen. I jumped to it and in came a nice bass of about 1lb.

That was it!

Loads of bites, 3 fish landed and after the discovery of the broken rod, some great thoughts of the adventures of the last 18 months.

Heres to the next year and the stories that are just waiting to be written.

Lesson 1 for today - Must get some smaller hooks!!!!!

Lesson 2 for today - Must get a(nother) beachcaster!!!!!!

Happy Days!!
