Llandudno Pier - 16/07/2007 |

Venue - Llandudno Pier Having been inspired by Headwyn's recent 'Mini Species' report from the pier, I decided to give it a try myself. I was told that small hooks and Ragworm dropped over the side would get me into the Mini's. I picked up some Rag from Geoff's in Rhyl and made my way to the pier.
I arrived 3 hours before high water.
2 rods were set up. My beachcaster with a 2/0 pennel rig was loaded with Fresh Mackerel and cast out. The Conolon uptider was used for the small stuff. I had 2 rigs of choice today. A 3 hook paternoster with size 6's and also Headwyn's patented rotton bottom 1 hook rig, consisting of a size 8 hook and a 4oz sinker, both tied using 10lb line to a 3 way swivel. I dropped down the small hooks and within seconds, the rod was twitching. The first fish of the day was a Corkwing Wrasse.(I think!!!!!)
As the day progressed, I was having to make guesses as to the species that were coming in. Apologies if I have misidentified them. Any confirmation would be greatly appreciated. Initially, I was fishing on the back of the platform, facing the pier. I found it to be very snaggy. I lost a good deal of rigs in the opening half hour. I decided to move to the side of the platform to avoid the snags. This worked. I didn't lose another rig all day. The fishing didn't suffer either. Thet were coming in thick and fast. The beachcaster pulled in a few Doggies, but I gave up on that rod because the bites were just nonstop on the small hooks. A half decent Pollack was next.
Followed by another Corkwing.
And another.
Next up was a Pouting, or was it a Poor Cod? I'm hoping it was a Pouting for my species count :)
Another Corkwing.
A Tompot Blenny.
Another Corkwing.
A Goldsinny?
I had 3 Black Bream.
A better bite and a small Codling arived.
Corkwing again.
A Corkwing with incredible colours.
Yet another Corkwing.
And so it went! I stopped protographing after a while. It was just fish after fish all day. I had great fun all day. I was getting ribbed initially when I was pulling in the 'little ones'. After a while though, the other anglers were coming over and checking out my tactics. :) Although I didn't fish for them, the Mackerel were showing in abundance. Apart from that, I only saw a few Pollack being landed. My final tally was 2 Dogfish, 1 Pollack, 1 Codling, 1 Blenny, 1 Pouting, 1 Goldsinny, 3 Black Bream, 20+ Corkwing. The futures bright, the futures 'Little Hooks' !!!!!!!!!
