Holyhead Breakwater - 31/05/2008 |

|
Venue - Holyhead Breakwater I joined a few familiar faces for an informal fish and meet at Holyhead Breakwater.
I arrived to find a few setup with feathers and succesfully bringing in the Mackerel right by the entrance to the Breakwater. After enough bait for all, we headed down to just before the 2nd bend. With a fish from your car experience on offer, I took advantage and packed everything except the kitchen sink.
I had 3 rods with me today. A 12ft Abu Enticer with an Abu Cardinal fixed spool reel, a Abu Conolon with Abu 7000 and an Abu Enticer telescopic spinning rod with a Wychwood Rogue fixed spool reel. The spinning rod was initially used with a Dexter Wedge for a try at a Mackerel or 2. Later it switched to drop down the side mini hunting, with small hooks and Ragworm. The other 2 rods had 3 hook flowing boat traces attatched. Combinations of Mackerel, Lug and Crab were used on these.
Bites were steady. Ray had a good knock and reeled a dead weight. Turned out to be a Spider Crab.
A couple of knocks for me led to 2 Doggies. One dropped off on the lift but the other was landed to get me off the mark. The spinning rod was getting instant bites but nothing was being hooked. I had a 3 hook Paternoster on with size 8 hooks. Mags next to me suggested I try a micro shrimp rig with size 14 hooks. The donation was duly accepted and bang! First drop, a Tompot Blenny.
To my left, Jordan was into another Spider Crab.
With 4 rods and a bait trap out, surprisingly Paul was quiet.
His patience did eventually pay off with a decent Ballan though. Further down, John and his crew were into a good variety of species. Having had a session earlier in the day, it was a marathon effort from all of them. Graham was into the fish. He had a steady stream of bites and landed a good selection of species including various Wrasse, Pollock, Doggies, Whiting and an Octopus to name a few.
Mags was on fire today!!!!!! When all was quiet elsewhere, she was constantly reaching for the rod. The small hooks were paying dividends. A Goldsinny Wrasse (I think).
Mags with a nicely coloured Ballan Wrasse.
I had a Common Blenny to make a set.
Mags's micro rig was keeping me busy. Severel Corkwings followed.
Mags and a Doggie.
Still they kept coming, Mags with one of many Pollock.
The light was now fading and having had a great days fishing, I decided to call it a day and head home to catch the re-run of 'Britain's Got No Talent'.
A journey from the subline to the ridiculous I'm sure you'll agree! My personal tally for the day was - 3 Dogfish, 3 Corkwings, Ballan, Whiting, Tompot Blenny, Common Blenny and a Spider Crab. Happy Days!!!
