Venue - Pen Y Chain Headland Having spent the last fews days at the Haven site in Pen Y Chain, I managed to sneak away from 'Rory's Tiger Club' for a few hours fishing on the headland.
I had come prepared with Fresh Lug and Frozen Sandeel. I picked up some Frozen Mackerel from a friendly fishmonger in Pwllheli. He didn't want payment, he just asked for a small donation to the RNLI. Well done that man!!! Having not fished this venue before, and with little knowledge of the terrain, I decided against the rocky headland in favour of a small cove.
I had 2 rods with me today. My trusty Fladen beachcaster and my newly acquired Berkley spinning rod. I used the beachcaster at distance with a 2 hook clipdown rig. I tried some light ledgering with the Berkley. Using a 2 hook flattie rig and a 2oz lead to get me close to the rocky outcrop.
I was using a variety of the baits.
With lug and sandeel on both rigs. First cast and within seconds the Fladen was twitching. It felt a good size and after breaking free the 6oz gripper, I landed a noce doggie. He had taken the lug. I rebaited and cast out again.
Straight away, another bite and same result. Another doggie. This was to be the story of the day. With 6 Dogfish landed in total. All caught at range on the Fladen.
I was yet to christen the Berkley. Having swapped the baited trace for a blast of the Dexter Wedge and the floating Chug Bug to no avail, I switched back to the flattie rig.
At last, I had a knock on the spinning rod, a good one at that. The rod slammed onto the floor and I dived down to save it. Having gained control, I started to retrieve but the line had disappeared right under the outcrop. There was no shifting it, I was well and truly snagged. The line broke under the strain and I was left pondering what could have been. Either way, the Berkley has still not broken its duck. Having spent most of the day in this wonderfully scenic location, it was now time to return to the campsite. The 'Knobbly Knees' competition beckoned!!!!!!.
Happy Days!!!
