Project Chicken - 18/05/2007

"Give a Chicken a Chance"

We decided a while ago that we wanted to keep chickens. After weighing up the options, we decided to convert our toolstore/outhouse to accomodate them.

Next decision was where to get the chickens from. A few nights browsing the internet led us to The Battery Hen Welfare Trust.

As the title would suggest, this organisation attempts to rehome as many ex-battery hens as is possible.

Having read further, the awareness of the plight of the poor battery hen made it an automatic decision to apply to rehome 4 of their birds.

We would have to wait 6 weeks until the next local farm 'disposes' of its hens. This gave us the time to plan and convert our facilities to make it a welcome home for these poor ladies.

Having cleared out the toolstore, we needed to provide the following..........

2 Nest Boxes

A Perch

A feeder

A Drinker

Ebay plays its part in any project we undertake. The Galvenised Feeder and Drinker were both bought online and received in a timely manner.

Next step was not so simple. A combined Nest Box and Perch was the plan.

A couple of scribbled notes and a trip to B+Q later and the problem was solved.

Twin nest boxes with an integral Perch rail.

The final part of the jigsaw was to build and erect a dividing gate to enable storage of the garden tools in the side of the house.

Whilst the Hens will eventually have free range of the garden, it was recommended that initially we erect a small run attatched to their house.

This temporary structure should hopefully let the Hens settle into their new home in a controlled manner.

With all the jobs completed, it is with great anticipation that we await the collection of our Hens.

Happy Days!!!
