Tide - High

Bait: Fresh Lug, Frozen Lug, Frozen Mackerel, Feathers, Dexter Wedge

Fished Splash Point today over high water. My plans of arriving 2hrs before were scuppered by babysitting duties.

I eventually reached Splash Point about 30 mins before high. I met up with Simon who had been there for over an hour without any joy.

It has been 24 years since I fished the breakwater at Splash Point, so today was going to bring back some great memories of the days that James Ball and myself blanked here during weekends and school holidays all those years ago. The fact is, I have never caught a thing here.

Today was going to be different though. Armed with some freshly pumped lug and my trusty beachcaster, I was in better shape than 24 years ago when I used to use my dads 6ft boat rod and could only afford to use 1 inch strips of salted lug as bait.

The obvious difference at this mark is the addition of a load of boulders that have been placed around the sea wall to strengthen the sea defenses. Not a major issue to fish across these, although a flick during retrieval is required to prevent any snags.

We were fishing a gully about 80 yds out. It was very quiet, with no noticeable knocks so I decided to give my new purchase it's first outing. I armed my Berkley Cherrywood spinning rod with a 40g Dexter Wedge. This was fun!!!!!!! A nice whippy action that got the lure out there, with an effortless retrieve. A nice 8lb Bass would have just been the icing on the cake but, alas, it was not to be. Definately looking forward to using this for the mackerel next year!

Simon hooked on a trace of feather and gave them a go for a while, again, nothing doing.

We both switched back to our baited traces and Simons rod tip started to twitch! Calmly he brought a nice little Dogfish to the edge of the rocks and gently lifted it up and clear of danger. His frozen lug tipped with mackerel was doing the trick.

Next cast I added a tip of Mackerel just to see if I could follow Simon and get rid of my Splash Point duck.

Unfortunately, that was it! 1 bite between the 2 of us.

My duck continues. Coming back here to exorcise the demons is high on the to do list.

Happy Days!!!!.
