Marine Lake, Rhyl - 17/11/2007 |

Venue - Rhyl, Marine Lake Having not heard of anyone fishing it, I had little information to go on. The Marine Lake is a man made saltwater Lagoon. There must be a chance that some species of sea fish could live in here? A good bet would be Flounder and Eels. There's only one way to find out............................ I parked in the Pay and Display carpark by the blue bridge.
The sign on the Pay Meter made a welcoming start to the day.
I unpacked the gear.
2 rods were used. With my spinning rod currently out of action, the trusty Fladen Warbird was joined by my Abu Conolon uptider. It was 3 hook flappers all round. I had no idea how deep the water was or indeed if there were any features of note, so I just cast out. One at range and the other closer in.
Situated on the edge of Rhyl's West End, the Marine Lake is the sort of place that if a shoe washes up on the shore, you check to see if there is a leg still attatched.
Luckily, there wasn't! Paul, aka Notbadlad popped down for a chat. With no action on the fishing front it made for a pleasant 10mins distraction from the inactivity. I lasted 2 hours without anything to report.
My baits were coming back untouched. Not even any signs of crab activity. That was it, time to pack up and head over to the harbour to finish off the bait. I reeled in the Conolon and was packing the rig away when I noticed a twitch on the Warbird. My automatic assumption was that I had knocked the tripod. I continued to pack the rod away when the Fladen tip bounced again. Surely not!!!!! Practically in disbelief, I reeled in and watched in amazement when a fish of some description broke the surface 50 yds out. What was it? I continued retrieving and was still trying to make it out. It didn't look like a flatfish. As it got closer in, it definately wasn't an Eel. Finally, it plopped onto dry land to reveal itself as a............................... Whiting!!!!!!!!
Caught on the Fresh Lug. To say I was surprised was an understatement. It was not the biggest specimen you will see, but it was a half decent size. It appeared healthy and in excellent condition. Luckily, it shook the hook out on landing and after a single photo, he was returned to the Lake. He shot off to tell his tale to his friends. As I did! I packed up and left this surprising venue, grinning from ear to ear. I will be returning! Happy Days !!!!!!!!!!
