Venue - Rhyl, Splash Point I arrived 3 hours before high. There were 4 others fishing. I joined up with Mehmet and asked if anyone had had any luck. All was very quiet, with everyone having blanked up till this point. I set up my Warbird with a 3 hook flapper baited with fresh Lug. It was the first outing for my new tripod. Like the Warbird, it's telescopic. My aim is to get all of my fishing gear into the boot of my car(if only I had one !!!!!!). The tripod was a bit fiddly to set up, but it did the job.
Not much on the fish front for the first hour, until I had a little rap. Was the Warbird going to get christened today?? Damn right it was!!!!!!!!!! In came a small Codling, caught on fresh Lug.
Mehmet had another Codling of about 1.5lb, caught on a coctail of Lug, Crab + Squid. High water came and went with no activity.
I felt a bit of extra distance was needed, so I switched to a clipped down pulley pennel rig baited with a whole Lug tipped on both hooks with some frozen Mackerel. I had a couple of further knocks that turned into nothing.
The sun had set and the dusky darkness had coincided with my last cast of the day. I was just lighting a ciggy when I noticed a small twitch followed quickly by an almighty rod bend. Enough to pull the rod and tripod over in an instant. I grabbed the rod from the sand and started to reel in. Fish on!!!! A big one at that!!!!!! I reeled in and felt the weight. This was no micro Codling, this was something that was giving a right good account of itself. I got it half way in and then the unthinkable happened. The line went light and I was left with no signs of anything left on. Fish off!!!!!!!!! I'll never know what it was but for this venue at this time of year it must have been a fair Codling. There is an outside chance that it was a marauding winter Bass. The frustrating thing is that I'll never know. Thats fishing folks!!!!!!!! That was it! With the adreneline still pumping, it was time to head home and ponder what might have been. Happy Days !!!!!!!!!!
